I decided on Linux Mint and to borrow a phrase, "it just works". I did the same thing just over a year ago and it's been great. I'm still on W7, but have decided I will have to make the jump to Linux when I can no longer support this machine. Once a local account has been created, you can delete the original Microsoft account you created during setup. Even that is a bit convoluted as you have to first start the process of creating a Microsoft account and finally on the second screen, be given the option that you wish to create a local account.
